Roi Roi Binale: The Assamese film industry stands at a historic crossroads as beloved music legend Zubeen Garg’s final cinematic masterpiece prepares for its grand nationwide release on October 31, 2025. The musical romantic drama “Roi Roi Binale” has already shattered every box office record in Assamese cinema history, even before hitting theaters with fans treating the release as both a celebration of artistry and an emotional farewell to their cultural icon who died mysteriously in Singapore just six weeks ago.

In a parallel development that has gripped the entire state, renowned author Dr. Rita Chowdhury has been summoned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Zubeen Garg’s death to record her statement about a podcast interview she conducted with the singer just six days before his tragic demise on September 19, 2025. The uncut interview which has garnered over 3.1 million views on YouTube, has drawn renewed public attention for offering rare glimpses into the singer’s physical and emotional state during his final days.

The investigation has reached a crucial phase with Singapore Police Force agreeing to share CCTV footage and witness statements within ten days under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty. The two-member SIT team, led by CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, recently returned from Singapore after coordinating with local authorities and visiting all locations connected to Garg’s death, including the yacht where the incident occurred.

Historic Film Release Creates Unprecedented Demand

“Roi Roi Binale” has created an emotional tsunami across Assam and beyond with advance bookings selling at a pace never witnessed in the 90-year history of Assamese cinema. Within the first hour of online bookings opening on October 24, over 15,000 tickets were sold with BookMyShow recording 57,920 tickets sold in just 24 hours. The pre-release business has already crossed Rs 50 lakh, shattering the previous record of Rs 40.20 lakh held by “Rudra”.

Cinema halls across Assam have scheduled early morning shows starting as early as 6 AM to accommodate overwhelming demand. In Guwahati alone, 14 multiplexes including Cinepolis, PVR and INOX have dedicated nearly all their screens to the film with some theaters arranging 19 shows per day. The Nazira cinema hall has been completely sold out until November 2 with 221 seats filling up within hours for multiple consecutive days.

For the first time in Assamese cinema history, the film will be released in 80 theaters across Assam and over 46 cities nationwide including metropolitan centers like

·       Mumbai

·       Delhi

·       Bangalore

·       Hyderabad

·       Kochi

·       Chandigarh

·       Ahmedabad

·       Dehradun. Bengaluru alone has dedicated 10 screens with 31 shows in a single day, an unprecedented achievement for an Assamese film.

The Story Behind the Dream Film

Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan and written, composed and produced by Zubeen Garg himself, “Roi Roi Binale” tells the emotional journey of a blind artist navigating love, music and destiny. The film, which took nearly three years to complete, represents Zubeen’s artistic vision in its purest form, featuring his original voice recordings and soulful compositions.

After Zubeen’s untimely death, his wife Garima Saikia Garg took on the responsibility of fulfilling her husband’s dream, ensuring the film would be released on October 31 as he had always wished. The production team confirmed that the film was mostly complete before his passing with only minor background music work remaining.

“The film is not just a cinematic experience—it’s a tribute, a farewell and a cultural moment that has united fans in grief, admiration and celebration,” said a manager of a Guwahati-based cinema hall.

Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details

The death investigation has taken multiple dramatic turns since Zubeen Garg drowned while swimming during a yacht party in Singapore on September 19. Seven individuals have been arrested so far, including North East India Festival chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, two personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.

The Kamrup Metropolitan district court has extended the judicial custody of five accused by another 14 days following a virtual hearing on October 27. The accused are currently lodged in Baksa and Haflong jails under tight security after violent protests erupted during their transfer, injuring nearly 40 police personnel.

Dr. Rita Chowdhury’s testimony has become crucial to the investigation as her podcast interview revealed concerning details about Zubeen’s condition before his Singapore trip. “During the podcast interview, Zubeen Garg’s body was shivering with high body temperature. I was unaware that he was about to leave for Singapore,” Dr. Chowdhury revealed in her statement to investigators.

The interview, recorded just six days before his death, showed Zubeen in a vulnerable state, discussing how he had been turned into a “machine” by those around him. In haunting foreshadowing, he spoke about his desire to be immersed in the Brahmaputra River rather than the sea, calling the sea “A Dead End”. Tragically, he drowned in the sea off St. John’s Island in Singapore weeks later.

Singapore-Assam Coordination Intensifies

The Singapore Police Force has stated that preliminary investigations do not suspect foul play, though their probe could take up to three more months to complete. Despite this, they have agreed to cooperate fully with the Assam SIT, sharing crucial evidence including CCTV footage, autopsy reports and witness statements.

“On October 20, we met the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore and shared all necessary details about the case. The following day, we held a meeting with a five-member Singapore Police team to discuss progress and coordination,” Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta revealed at a press conference after returning from Singapore.

The SIT has already recorded statements from more than 70 people, including nine of the 11 Non-Resident Assamese who were present in Singapore at the time of the incident. Investigators have also detected suspicious financial transactions worth over Rs 1.1 crore in the accounts of Zubeen’s personal security officers, which are being probed under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly assured the public that the investigation will be “transparent and free from political influence” with the charge sheet expected to be filed before the court by November. The government has also requested the Gauhati High Court to set up a fast-track court for day-to-day hearings in the case.

A Cultural Phenomenon Beyond Cinema

The #JusticeForZubeenGarg movement has crossed three million mentions across social media platforms, making it one of the largest online campaigns in Assam’s history. Fans from 114 out of 195 countries worldwide have searched for information about the singer’s death, demonstrating his global impact.

The “Roi Roi Binale” release has become more than a film premiere—it represents a collective mourning process for millions who grew up with Zubeen’s music. His versatility as a singer, composer, actor and cultural activist made him the heartbeat of Assam. From Bollywood hits like “Ya Ali” from the 2006 film “Gangster” to thousands of Assamese folk songs, his musical legacy spans dozens of languages and genres.

“We are not merely watching a film—we are celebrating the life, legacy and artistry of Zubeen Garg. What was once a cinematic dream has now become a collective farewell, uniting fans in emotion and pride,” expressed a cinema hall official in Jorhat.

Box Office Projections Shatter Expectations

Industry analysts predict “Roi Roi Binale” could become the first Assamese film to cross the Rs 100 crore gross mark at the box office. To enter the top 10 highest-grossing Assamese films of all time, the movie needs to earn just Rs 4.14 crore, a target it appears poised to achieve within the first few days.

The current highest-grossing Assamese film is “Bidurbhai” with Rs 15.75 crore, followed by “Bhaimon Da” at Rs 14.31 crore. Given the unprecedented advance bookings and emotional connect, industry experts believe “Roi Roi Binale” will rewrite all existing records.

Cinema halls have reported that tickets ranging from Rs 120 to Rs 900 are selling out within minutes of becoming available. The BookMyShow platform shows nearly every show marked “Filling Fast” or “Sold Out” across the state.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has requested the Assam Chief Minister to make the film tax-free, citing allegations that some theater owners are inflating ticket prices to exploit the huge rush. However, the film’s production team clarified that price surges resulted from dynamic pricing algorithms used by multiplex chains, which automatically increase rates after 60-80% seats are booked.

The Road Ahead

As October 31 approaches, Assam holds its breath for two parallel narratives to unfold. On cinema screens, audiences will witness Zubeen Garg’s final artistic vision come to life, a soul-stirring musical that explores love, identity and the enduring power of art. Behind the scenes, investigators continue piecing together the mysterious circumstances of his death with crucial evidence from Singapore expected within days.

The judicial commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of Gauhati High Court has been tasked with ensuring a thorough inquiry. While Singapore authorities have ruled out foul play in preliminary findings, the Assam SIT continues to investigate multiple angles, including financial irregularities, negligence and possible criminal conspiracy.

“The film releases just weeks after his untimely and mysterious death on foreign shores. Assam is holding its breath,” reflected multiple news outlets covering the dual developments.

For millions of fans, “Roi Roi Binale” represents not just a movie release but a final goodbye to a legend who gave voice to their dreams, struggles and identity. As the curtain rises on October 31, cinema halls will transform into temples of remembrance, where every song, every scene and every moment will echo the irreplaceable presence of Zubeen Garg—a cultural icon whose music will continue to inspire generations.

The investigation, meanwhile, marches toward its conclusion with authorities pledging that justice will prevail and truth will emerge. As Chief Minister Sarma emphasized, “Our collective resolve remains—Justice for Zubeen will prevail”.
